Whipple has done many public sector projects for municipalities as well as for Non-Profit organizations. We believe in the preservation of our built heritage wherever possible and a lot of our pubilc work is testimony to that belief.
Waterproofing and Roofing Repairs
Post major renovation of the Union Station, runoff and groundwater persisted in seeping into occupied spaces and rendering other spaces unfit for rent. Whipple performed an initial investigation to aid the architect in understanding the problem. Whipple then removed the existing plaza surfacing, its underlying waterproofing membranes and the adjacent membrane roofing. Intense scheduling was required to avoid exposing the riders to the hazards as well as the dust and debris created by the work. In addition, because of the severely restricted parking in the area, all concreting operations were performed after midnight.
Restoration
This beautiful 19th century hall has been under the care of the Whipple Construction for nearly thirty years. World-renowned for its brilliant acoustical qualities, it is one of the most sought-after venues in North America for recording artists and has played host for countless stage performances, presidential visits and even funerals of some of the more notable members of the community. Whipple Construction’s work has been a true partnership with the Mechanics Association in the areas of design, budget, value-engineering, scheduling and the management of construction funds.

Multiple Projects
City Council Chamber renovations:Whipple’ restored the Chamber’s majestic 30-foot high ceiling, its imposing three-sectioned, 15-foot long rostrum, and the bathroom facilities, carefully coordinating project logistics to accommodate ongoing government meetings.
Interior Office Alterations: The project involved the renovation of a century-old former city school building and upgrading of interior space where the building and health inspectors are located. Due to the age of the structure, there also were numerous code compliance issues that had to be addressed.
Worcester Department of Public Works HVAC Upgrades : Whipple was the project coordinator on this mechanical / electrical upgrade, contributing self-performed work in support of the major infrastructure installation. Key to the success of this project was the integration of new ductwork, equipment and refrigerant piping throughout the four-story building, while not disturbing or displacing the critical municipal functions.
Tuckerman Hall
Tuckerman Hall is one of Worcester’s jewels, a unique triangular building with two beautiful assembly spaces and several intimate meeting rooms. Built originally as Worcester’s Womens’ Club it is now the home of the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra. Many different floor levels made handicapped accessibility an unusual challenge. Restoring its exterior windows called for the expertise with historical structures for which Whipple is known. The Hall’s fine acoustics required industrial glazing of existing wood sash to minimize noise from outside traffic. All the interior finishes, fine woodwork and ornamental plaster were refurbished as part of the Hall’s initial restoration.
