Healthcare Projects

Whipple has been tasked to do multiple highly sensitive construction projects for our our local hospitals. These projects are usually done in ways that do not disrupt the flow of the business of the institution and or often under tight time constraints.

Washburn House Retirement Community

Additions, alterations and exterior restoration

Having performed complete renovations and restorations to every part of Washburn House, we are most proud of the more recent work we performed there—exterior restorations to the building envelope, replacement of windows and doors to match their original Victorian grandeur and the design and rebuilding of the original front covered-entry porch. Throughout this work, the house remained in full operation. This created numerous challenges for completing the work on time and on budget. The welfare of the residents being foremost in our minds, we provided properly filtered air, constructed dust partitions and physical barriers to protect residents from harm and instituted precedent-setting standards for fire watches, safety management and overall public protection. We have worked tirelessly for the house to ensure the minute construction details are historically accurate, the designs are specified to maximize efficiency and the owner receives maximum return on investment.

UMass Medical

Multiple Projects Projects

Multiple projects

Description: Whipple built an in-house pharmacy on the UMass Memorial Hahnemann campus. The project entailed converting a dialysis laboratory into a full- service retail operation. Maintaining a clean atmosphere within public corridors and adjacent medical office space was essential.
Whipple converted UMass Memorial’s radiology office support space into a Mammography suite. It was imperative that no business interruption occurred. Working closely with client and architect, the Whipple project team was able to deliver a state-of-the art, digital mammography unit without disruption.

Whipple relocated an existing anesthesiology room and then built a new operating room at the Memorial campus. The critical nature of the work involved many unique precautions to allow the work to progress while the adjacent rooms were in use. Much of the work was performed off hours. This was primarily an interior finishes project, but there were also substantial infrastructure and equipment changes. We controlled infection by maintaining sterility of the adjacent spaces. This and other special life-safety precautions such as clean work suits, facial masks, duct partitioning and HEPPA air filtration were implemented to ensure cleanliness. Close, accurate scheduling of the coincidental work areas allowed the seamless transition of the occupied spaces to the newly renovated space.

Benedict Building Waiting Room Renovation at University Campus

Benedict Building Waiting Room Renovation at University Campus

With more than two thousand patients visiting each day for health services, the Benedict Building waiting room is one of the most trafficked locations on the University Campus. The Whipple team was hired to renovate the main waiting room, including the installation of new ceilings, counters, appointment stations, reception desk, seating, and new HVAC equipment. The busy waiting area was kept open and functioning throughout the renovation without one complaint related to construction.
