PAXTON – Whipple Construction teamed up with Anna Maria College, FEMA, and the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce to host a Disaster Planning Symposium on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at the Zecco Performing Arts Center on the Anna Maria College campus.

The event updated attendees on the recent natural disasters impacting the East Coast and focused on the most recent tornado that landed on June 1st and ripped through parts of Western and Central Mass.

Whipple’s Jerry Pucillo, Vice President of Development, talked about sustainable construction practices used in disaster planning, focusing on construction techniques which can done beforehand to mitigate impacts on the environment post disaster as well as provide for better construction in a more ecologically secure location so a disaster event is less likely to impact a properly planned and executed program.

Joining Jerry in the discussion was Nick Russo of FEMA who elaborated on the United States federal response to such catastrophes. As a Federal Coordinating Officer (FCO), Mr. Russo orchestrates all Federal resources and programs necessary to support State and Local governors and their representatives during these periods of crisis. Lastly, Dr. Gerald Lewis concentrated on organizational resiliency with the emphasis on “people recovery,” which tended to the psychological impact that these catastrophes can have on employees long after the natural disaster has took place.

The event lasted for three hours and is hoped to be the first of many to come in the future.

WORCESTER – Whipple Construction hosted an Open House event on September 22, 2011 to publicly announce the new executive team and to show off the new office space of Whipple’s headquarters, located at 446 Main Street in Worcester, MA.

Geoffrey Evancic, the new President of Whipple since April, warmly greeted guests at the catered event and briefly held a proclamation to former President Christian Baehrecke to honor his 55 years of service to Whipple and to the city of Worcester. Mayor Joseph O’Brien was in attendance and graciously gave Mr. Baehrecke a Key to the City.

Christian was hired by Colonel Whipple, the founder of Whipple Construction, in 1956 after receiving his undergraduate in civil engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Christian is a master of historical restoration, with his largest and most well-known project being the restoration and preservation of Mechanics Hall (321 Main Street, Worcester, MA) in 1977. While doing work there, Christian became fond of a particular painting used to decorate the construction fencing during the restoration of Mechanics Hall. The picture has hung on the wall at Whipple Construction since the completion of that project and had been quite the conversational piece. President Geoffrey Evancic presented the picture to Christian as a token of appreciation for his devoted loyalty to the company. Furthermore, Christian also received a governor’s citation from Governor Deval Patrick in recognition of his dedication and service to Whipple Construction for the past 55 years. Lastly, Mayor O’Brien and Whipple Construction jointly stated that a special project will be commemorated for Christian with the construction of a playground to be named in his honor for a school in need in Worcester.

The team at Whipple is looking forward to the new opportunities and development that will occur over the next few months, and the re-establishment of old relationships, as well as the creation of new ones. The new executive staff brings a great deal of national construction experience to Whipple’s management depth, and will offer a seasoned balance approach to their clients on their current and future projects.
