Project: Fire restoration and interior alterations

Description: Fire gutted this decade-old group medical practice building, and the project involved scheduling the restoration and retrofit to allow continuing operation of the adjacent medical offices. Careful planning was required to fit the mechanical, electrical and life-safety systems into the existing plenum spaces while maximizing the area available for the practice. The entire interior was rebuilt from the ground level to the roof, an elevator was added and new interior finishes, woodwork, doors and windows were installed. The task of rebuilding the roof during severe winter weather was particularly challenging, and the nature of the project called for rigorous safety requirements. The office opened on schedule.

Cost: $2.3 million.

Project: Corporate Headquarters and Devens Services Facility

Description: These two projects were giant steps for this growing human services organization. The corporate headquarters project involved the phased renovation of a former manufacturing facility to a beautiful office and clinical space; the Devens project was a completely new facility. Offering services such as adult and child daycare, after-school programs and residential assistance, the foundation had to maintain its core functions as the work progressed. We were able to maintain partial occupancy through additional precautions.

Cost: Headquarters $ 3.2 million
Devens $ 1.3 million

Project: Operating Rooms

Description: This fast-track project involved the relocation of an existing anesthesiology room and the building of a new operating room at the Memorial campus. The critical nature of the work involved many unique precautions to allow the work to progress while the adjacent rooms were in use. Much of the work was performed off hours. This was primarily an interior finishes project, but there were also substantial infrastructure and equipment changes. We controlled infection by maintaining sterility of the adjacent spaces. This and other special life-safety precautions such as clean work suits, facial masks, duct partitioning and HEPPA air filtration were implemented to ensure cleanliness. Close and accurate scheduling of the coincidental work areas allowed the seamless transition of the occupied spaces to the newly renovated space.

Cost: $350,000.

Client: Washburn House Retirement Community
Worcester, MA

Project: Additions, alterations and exterior restoration.

Description: Having performed complete renovations and restorations to every part of Washburn House, we are most proud of the more recent work we performed there--exterior restorations to the building envelope, replacement of windows and doors to match their original Victorian grandeur and the design and rebuilding of the original front covered-entry porch. Throughout this work, the house remained in full operation. This created numerous challenges for completing the work on time and on budget. The welfare of the residents being foremost in our minds, we provided properly filtered air, constructed dust partitions and physical barriers to protect residents from harm and instituted precedent-setting standards for fire watches, safety management and overall public protection. We have worked tirelessly for the house to ensure the minute construction details are historically accurate, that the designs are specified to maximize efficiency and that the owner receives maximum return on investment. The Washburn House was so impressed with our performance that the president of this firm, Mr. Rodney White, now sits on their board of trustees to help manage their finances and physical assets.
